Is this legal?

This is a fair question that a lot of coin jewelry makers get. After all, defacing currency sounds like something that should land you in trouble.

Short answer - Yes! It's perfectly legal.

Long answer - Title 18 Section 331 of the United States Code states the following:

"Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States, or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in actual use or circulation as money within the United States; or whoever fraudulently possesses, passes, utters, publishes, or sells, or attempts to pass, utter, publish, or sell, or brings into the United States, any such coin, knowing the same to be altered, defaced, mutilated, impaired, diminished, falsified, scaled, or lightened shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

The key word here is fraudulent. Here's an example: if we were to take a penny and alter it to make it look like a dime, and try to pass that penny off as a dime, that would be considered fraud and a violation of 18 USC 331. Obviously, that's not what we're about.

We are taking silver coinage (which has been out of circulation in the United States since the 1960s anyway) and turning it into jewelry. We are marketing and selling these altered coins as jewelry - not to be used as legal tender. In fact, here is a legal disclaimer:

We declare full compliance with 18 USC 331 and do not deface, mutilate, falsify, or otherwise alter any coin with fraudulent intent, nor do we attempt to pass off our products as legal tender in any way. Our products are intended to be used as jewelry.

How do I find my ring size?

We recommend visiting a local jeweler to get professionally sized. If you're ordering from outside the US, you can use the ring size conversion chart on our product pages for additional guidance.

What are your rings made from?

Every ring is handcrafted from a coin that is made of at least 90% silver. Fun fact: this composition isn't far off from sterling silver, which contains 92.5% silver. None of our products contain nickel or any other common jewelry allergens.
